Custom Cabinetry & Millwork

Operatory cabinets, sterilization workstations, reception desks, and built-ins — designed in-house, built to healthcare durability standards.

About Custom Cabinetry & Millwork

Off-the-shelf dental and medical cabinetry rarely fits a Manhattan space well. Awkward column locations, irregular wall depths, and program-specific equipment requirements push most premium practices toward custom millwork. DBF Studio designs and builds custom cabinetry — operatory units, sterilization workstations, reception desks, lab benches, and built-ins — with finish materials and hardware specified for healthcare durability.

Why DBF Studio

Custom millwork is a part of nearly every project we deliver. Our shop builds operatory cabinets to manufacturer-equipment tolerances, sterilization workstations sized to the practice’s actual instrument volume, and reception furniture that reads as architecture rather than furniture. Premium materials sourced globally; finishes spec’d for the cleaning regimens healthcare environments demand.

Scope of Work

  • Operatory side and rear cabinets to manufacturer specifications
  • Sterilization workstations and instrument processing benches

  • Solid surface, quartz, and stainless steel countertops

Our Process

  1. Design. Cabinetry layouts produced in-house alongside the architectural design.
  2. Specification & fabrication. Materials and hardware specified; shop drawings reviewed; fabrication scheduled to align with construction.
  3. Site install. Coordinated with general construction so cabinetry lands in a finished space.
  4. Equipment fit-up. Coordinated with equipment installers so chairs, delivery systems, and imaging integrate cleanly.

Cost & Timeline

Custom cabinetry pricing scales with linear footage, material, and detail. Operatory side cabinets typically run $3,500–$7,500 per chair. Sterilization workstations $8,000–$20,000. Custom reception desks $10,000–$40,000 depending on size and material. Bundled into a full buildout, custom millwork commonly accounts for 8–15% of total project cost.

Permits & Compliance

Cabinetry itself doesn’t trigger DOB filings. When custom millwork is part of a buildout or renovation, it’s covered under that project’s filings.

“First what was pleasant to find out is that you understood what we wanted at once! We felt the high professional level as we were proposed all the staff we needed and nothing more! All the necessary information about cabinetry what we were searching for was given to us immediately, so the only thing for us was to choose the material we liked.”

— Jeffrey Pomerantz, Prosthodontist — Manhattan

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order cabinetry only, without the buildout?

Yes. Standalone millwork engagements are common — particularly for practices that want to upgrade reception, sterilization, or operatory cabinets without a full renovation.

How does pricing compare to manufacturer cabinetry like A-dec?

Custom millwork is usually competitive with premium manufacturer cabinetry like A-dec Inspire and similar lines, with the advantage that it actually fits your space. Off-the-shelf cabinetry is cheaper but rarely fits Manhattan dimensions cleanly.

Do your cabinets work with A-dec, Midmark, and Planmeca equipment?

Yes. Every operatory cabinet we build is dimensioned to the actual chair, delivery system, and imaging units the practice has specified.

What materials do you use?

Solid surface, quartz, and stainless steel countertops. Healthcare-grade laminates and wood veneers for casework. Antimicrobial finishes where indicated.

How long does custom cabinetry take?

Six to twelve weeks from sign-off on shop drawings to install. Lead times vary with material and hardware availability.

Do you handle install?

Yes. Install is coordinated with the construction schedule so cabinetry lands in a clean, finished space.

Can I see examples?

Yes — our portfolio includes operatory cabinetry, sterilization workstations, and reception desks across NYC dental and medical practices.
